Alan Arkin, a versatile actor known for his work in both comedy and drama, has passed away due to cardiac arrest at the age of 89.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Arkin moved to Los Angeles at the age of 11 and studied acting at various institutions.

Arkin began his entertainment career as a singer with The Tarriers before transitioning to stage acting.

Arkin's career spanned over 40 years, and he appeared in more than 100 TV shows and feature films.

He received  four Academy Award nominations throughout his career and won an Oscar in 2007 for his role in "Little Miss Sunshine.

Arkin also directed films and wrote books for children.

He was married twice and had three sons, all of whom pursued careers in acting.

In recent years, Arkin starred in the Netflix comedy series "The Kominsky Method" alongside Michael Douglas.

He was admired for his ability to disappear into his characters and his skill in portraying a wide range of roles.
